Lions trade TE T.J. Hockenson to Vikings

Lions will pick up 5th-year option on TE T.J. Hockenson

Dolphins 31, Lions 27 : Game # 7 ( 2022 )

I'm somewhat surprised that Brad Holmes and Dan Campbell decided to make this trade. IMHO, the trade offer from the Vikings wasn't enough trade value for Hockenson. I'm factoring in the Salary Cap, Hockenson being at most an average In-Line Blocker, that he has many quiet receiving production games, and the Lions are all but officially out of the 2022 season playoff race.
I'm not overly concerned that Hockenson is now on a divisional opponent and probably will end up signing a long term contract extension with them. The Vikings will probably move on from TE Irv Smith Jr. after the season. Smith suffered an ankle injury against the Cardinals this past Sunday that is expected to keep him out for 8 to 10 weeks. Smith has many similarities to Hockenson as a TE.
While Hockenson has been up and down regarding receiving production, having Hockenson on the field helped others on the Lions Offense get opened plenty of times. This is a dimension the Lions probably won't be able to replace this season. Beyond this season, which is clearly the Lions brass primary focus, the Lions will probably need to add a higher end receiving TE than is currently on the roster.

Instant reaction to the Lions trading T.J. Hockenson to the Vikings
........
The contract factor is probably the # 1 reason the Lions traded T.J. Hockenson. But like Jeff Risdon said, the addition of the Lions 4th Round pick being part of this trade is too much to give back to the Vikings. At most, the Lions should have given the Vikings the Lions 2023 6th Round Pick back, instead of the Lions 4th Round pick.
