2021 NFL free agency preview: Detroit Lions would be wise to pass on big-name RBs
........
My take is the Lions need to add two RBs in which the team brass believes can fill the # 2 and # 3 RB roles. With Matthew Stafford going 3 time zones away and Anthony Lynn the Lions new Offensive Coordinator, I'm anticipating that the Lions running game will be an even greater priority than it has already been.
Kerryon Johnson is terrific at picking up blitzes and is a solid receiver. Unfortunately, knee injuries have apparently reduced his physical ability considerably. Competition behind D'Andre Swift is needed.
Malcolm Brown and Corey Clement probably can be signed at a relatively low cost. Clement might even be available at an NFL Veteran Minimum amount. Brown would be my preference if the asking prices are in essence less than a million dollars apart per season. Brown has been more durable and productive. It's reassuring that Brad Holmes is very familiar with Brown, and Duce Staley & Dave Fipp are very familiar with Corey Clement.
Matt Breida, Mike Davis, and Jamal Williams would be good additions, not factoring in what it would cost the Lions to sign one of them. Williams, like far too many other RBs, has an impressive track record against the Lions. Williams' receiving skills are a plus. He's earned Aaron Rodgers' trust, which is easier said than done.
Chances are, Breida will be more expensive than the Lions should pay for a # 2 RB. Davis and / or Williams have a better chance of fitting economically.

As you say, if the Lions want to put most of their chips on the running game, they better have very solid and competitive #2 and #3 RBs. It will be be very interesting to see how the Lions organize their RBs committee.

Agreed
I believe Malcolm Brown can fill the # 2 RB role effectively. Brown isn't a flashy player. He's the type that can help move the chains and put the Lions in at least decent down and distance situations. Being that Brown signed a 2 year offer sheet with the Lions when the previous regime was in place, I'm confident that he would have serious interest in signing with the Lions with Brad Holmes the new GM and with the new coaching staff in place.
