2021 Detroit Lions free agent profile: Oday Aboushi was a low-key, pleasant surprise

Lions to re-sign G Oday Aboushi to a 1 yr contract

My take on the play of Oday Aboushi is different, even though the end result is similar. I thought in the
2020 season that on most plays, Aboushi performed at a higher level over the course of a season as he's done in years. Maybe even since coming into the NFL as a 5th Round pick of the Jets. The problem is that he was either beaten badly physically on many, if not most of the other plays. Or he made a bonehead mental mistake. Sometime in the form of a penalty. Two such penalties contributed greatly to the Lions game in Green Bay back in September, turning around in a negative fashion.
My guess is Joe Dahl at best will need to restructure his contract downward to remain with the Lions. Even that might not be enough to prevent Dahl from being a Salary Cap Casualty.
I think the Lions would be willing to re-sign Oday Aboushi, at a price at or near the NFL Veteran Minimum. The question would then become, will Aboushi get one or more better contract offers elsewhere, based on his overall play in the 2020 season? He might, as the two teams with the most salary cap, the Jets and Jaguars, could envision him as a starter. In the Jets case, he would be playing pretty close to where he grew up ( Brooklyn ) and with the team he spent the early part of his NFL career. Plus, play for new HC Robert Saleh, who he praised when becoming Jets HC. With the Jaguars, Aboushi would be playing under Darrell Bevell, their new OC, again.
