Detroit Lions release RB Jonathan Williams
......
This is potentially an opportunity for Jonathan Williams to be claimed off waivers by a team still in the playoff hunt. The WFT is the most likely team that would have interest in Williams, being that the Lions signed Williams off the WFT P.S. earlier this season WFT RB Antonio Gibson has been dealing with an injury. He missed the last two games.
It's fair to say that the fumble by Jonathan Williams vs. the Texans didn't help his cause with the Lions. When you are at the bottom of the depth chart, every mistake is magnified in terms of opportunties for playing time.

Sure, he only had a limited number of snaps to plead his case. As you say, he can still be a valuable backup in another team.

Because Jonathan Williams is an UFA in 2021, I'm comfortable with the Lions moving on from him. Especially, since it wasn't likely Williams was going to get opportunties in the final two games.
I hope he is either claimed by a team in the playoff hunt or signed in the coming days or weeks. It wouldn't surprise me if Williams ends up being a significant positive factor in the playoffs, if given the opportunity.
