NFL Week 16 2020 picks
Buccaneers (-9.5) at Lions
MDS’s take: The Buccaneers have a knack for playing closer against bad teams than they should, and I see that happening again on Saturday, as they’ll need a 60-minute effort to put the Lions away.
MDS’s pick: Buccaneers 21, Lions 17.
Florio’s take: Tom Brady returns to Michigan, most likely for the last time in his football career. He won’t leave with a loss.
Florio’s pick: Buccaneers 31, Lions 20.
..........
he combination of the Lions injuries, limited ability to slow down a high quaility Passing Game, and the COVID-19 situation with key Lions coaches doesn't bode well in terms of the Lions chances against the Bucs. Even if by chance the Lions build a double digit lead, I still don't think the Lions will end up winning the game. This game has the potential to get very ugly for the Lions.

With Detroit Lions' defensive staff isolating for COVID, these assistants may be in charge
.........
If the top 4 Lions Defensive Coaches ( in terms of rank ) are not allowed to be at Ford Field on Saturday for the game, one of the Defensive coaches ( Stephen Thomas or Tony Carter, not Ty Warren. ) will likely be designated Defensive play caller. With all 3 of the available Defensive Coaches collectively needing to work closely together with play and personnel decisions. With communication to the signal callers on the field and making sure that players come off and go on to the field, based on whether the player is part of the Defensive package of the play call. Much easier said than done.

Buccaneers can clinch playoff spot with win over lowly Lions
..........
As difficult as the Lions situation is regarding the COVID-19 related coaching situation, an even greater obstacle is the Lions injury riddle CB situation. Against Tom Brady and his high level WRs Mike Evans, Chris Godwin, and Antonio Brown, the Lions will be at an enormous disadvantage if the Defense doesn't generate a pass rush.

Detroit News scouting report: Buccaneers at Lions
..........
Rob Gronkowski is a near lock First Ballot HOFer. A 13.1 Yards per catch avg. is a very good season for a TE. Yet, this is 'Gronk's lowest per catch avg. since his rookie season! Couple this with being an elite blocking TE and team success, Gronk has been nothing short of a measuring stick at the TE position.
Ndamukong Suh was on the winning team the previous two seasons in games in Detroit. Including, the Bucs last season. He's a major contributor to their success against the run and still is an effective pass rusher.
JPP and Shaq Barrett are amongst the best edge rusher tandems in the NFL. JPP reminds me of JJ Watt from the standpoint of wingspan and instincts. Both are great athletes, with JPP quicker and Watt more powerful.
William Gholston is a good complimentary piece, who is at his best vs. the run and causes problems for QBs with his large wingspan.

Detroit Lions vs. Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Dave Birkett's scouting report, prediction
........
Todd Bowles is an exsmple of someone who is a much better Defensive Coordinator than he was as a Head Coach ( with the Jets. ). This is a game in which Kerryon Johnson should get more snaps than usual, because of the high frequency the Bucs blitz. Having both Kerryon Johnson and D'Andre Swift in the game at the same time on some plays is something I hope is part of the game plan and the play calling of Sean Ryan.
Leonard Fournette has big time ability but lacks consistency. Fournette was expected by many to be what Derrick Henry became for the Titans but with even more speed than Henry. Hence, he was taken with pick # 4 in 2017. The Jaguars are 1-13. But their decision releasing Fournette this summer, after UDRFA James Robinson emerged in practice, turned out well for them. Fournette offers more than Henry as a receiver but his lack of consistency is evident in that facet of play.
The Titans have better balance on Offense than the Bucs do, even when Ronald Jones is available. Yet, the Bucs explosiveness on Offense, having a better run Defense, and Pass Rush makes them from my point of view a more difficult matchup than the Titans. This was even before the Lions COVID-19 coaches situation.

Devin White is the NFC defensive player of the week
........
This is big time production for any Defensive player. That much more for an Inside LB, compared to an edge rusher or even a DT.
Devin White and LaVonte David are ILBs that are 3 Down players. Big time speed and athletic ability.

.........
As a CB with plenty of NFL experience, Tremaine Brock could end up seeing plenty of action against the Bucs.

My predictuon for the game is Bucs 41, Lions 24. I would be plesantly surprised if the Lions have a chance to win this game in the final 3 minutes.
I plan on offering thoughts and info about the game beginning Sunday Morning.

In the Vikings @ Saints game yesterday, there was a high scoring offense on one hand and a team trailing and unable to keep pace on the other hand ... we may well have a similar scenario in the Buccs @ Lions game ?
