Detroit Lions training camp preview: Can Jeff Okudah meet soaring expectations?
............
I"m cautiously optimistic that the Lions Secondary will be a team strength, as Jeff Okudah gains experience and exposure, as the season moves along.
The 3 game suspension for Jayron Kearse at the start of tbe regular season is concerning, both on Defense and on Special Teams. Will Harris seems to be improving. But he remains a question mark.
Miles Killebrew will likely be on the Lions 53 man roster at least while Kearse is serving his suspension.
The NFL increased Practice Squad number to 16 for the 2020 season and much more overall P.S. Flexibility could very realistically mean that the Lions expose more DBs to waivers and/ or the open market in the cutdown to 53 than was the case last season.

Ouch: Lions lose 3 of their top cornerbacks to hamstring injuries heading into Packers week

Tony McRae already looks like one of the Lions best Special Teams players. As a CB in this first game with the Lions, the more he played, the more he struggled. The question with him becomes, how much are these struggles correctable?
Amani Oruwariye clearly still needs to improve his tackling and getting off blocks. His coverage was far from stellar in this game as well.
The sooner Jeff Okudah is healthy enough to play, the better. He needs experience, even though growing pains are inevitable.
It remains to be seen which, if, any of the 3 injured CBs will be available for the game at Green Bay.

The Lions are in a bit of a pickle with cornerback Desmond Trufant nearing a return

If Marcus Trufant is healthy enough to play against the Saints with significant risk of re-injuring the hamstring or another injury that relates to the hamstring injury he suffered against the Bears, he should play this Sunday. The Lions can definitely use his overall experience and his specific experience against Drew Brees and the overall Saints Offense.
A rotation at outside CB would make sense when Trufant is back in action. This would keep all 3 of the Lions top outside CBs more fresh.
Another option is for Trufant to be used in the slot, especially while Justin Coleman remains on short term I.R. Darryl Roberts health status for the game is in question after he showed up on yesterday's Injury Report.
