Cardinals sign Devon Kennard
………………
This new thread is a continuation of the following thread:
Lions to release LB Devon Kennard if a trade doesn't occur
detroit-lions-forum.proboards.com/thread/627/lions-release-devon-kennard-trade
I'm glad under the circumstance of Devon Kennard being released by the Lions that he has the opportunity to play in front of family and friends with the Cardinals. Kennard is from Phoenix.
Interesting, the Lions play the Cardinals ( yet again ) in Arizona in the 2020 season. As much as Kennard puts into all games, it's easy to envision Kennard having this game circled once the schedule dates come out.

………………
I'm pleasant surprised that Devon Kennard received a contract as good as the Cardinals are giving him. They clearly appreciate the intangible elements Kennard brings to the table.

Lions lost free agent review: Did Detroit undervalue Devon Kennard?
....... Because the Lions used Jamie Collins in 2020 far less as a pass rusher than was the case with Devon Kennard in 2019, the decision to release Kennard didn't turn out well. One mistake in particular Bob Quinn made was extending Christian Jones' contract in the middle of the 2019 season. If Quinn would have let Jones play put his original 2 year contract with the Lions, then not re-sign him, that would have been a better decision than releasing Kennard in March, 2020. This is even with Jones 'only' having a $ 2.3 million + salary cap number in 2020.
Because Trey Flowers missed the Lions final games in the 2020 season, having Romeo Okwara and Devon Kennard on the field often at the sane time ( Everson Griffen could have then be used more inside in expected passing situations ) would have been a better combination than what was far too often on the field.
Austin Bryant was a major question mark after missing all of his rookie training camp and the majority of his rookie ( 2019 ) season. He struggled for the most part when he played in the 2nd half of the 2019 season. Then the COVID-19 situation didn't enable Bryant to get much needed coaching in the 2020 off-season. Expecting Bryant to have picked up much of production that Devon Kennard provided in the previous 2 seasons wasn't realistic.
Julian Okwara wasn't even drafted by the Lions until over a month after Kennard was released. Even once Julian Okwara was drafted by the Lions, expectations for him in 2020 should have been modest. He was coming off season ending injury / surgery with Notre Dame.
