NFL free agency: Detroit Lions' never-ending search for a running game continues
……………
Unless there's unexpectedly good value at RB in the 1st phase of the FA period, the Lions shouldn't sign a RB from another team. After the first few days of the FA period, there's a much better chance for value.
If the Lions remain pat at RB until the draft, that's fine also. In addition to the draft, there will be veteran RBs available after the draft that can be role players.

Broncos sign Melvin Gordon
Melvin Gordon excited to team up with Phillip Lindsay
………………
Three thoughts come to mind:
1. I'm glad the Lions weren't the team to end up with Melvin Gordon under these contract terms. It's not an efficient way to put together a roster. 2. Melvin Gordon's holdout and turning down the LA Chargers contract offer last year proved costly for him financially. 3. I'm surprised the Broncos signed Melvin Gordon, especially when considering they have a legit # 1 RB already on the roster, and the contract numbers they gave Gordon.

Titans release Dion Lewis
Giants agree to terms on one-year deal with Dion Lewis
…...………
I'm comfortable with the Lions going in another direction at RB. The last 2 seasons, Dion Lewis ran for less than 4.0 yards per rushing carry. The 3.9 avg. in the 2019 season was very close to 4.0. However, the Titans had one of the best run blocking units in the NFL in the 2019 season. Lewis hasn't been used on returns since his Patriots days. Lewis turns 30 in September. Even with his receiving skills factored in, I think the Lions have a good opportunity to get more out of a RB roster spot by looking elsewhere.

Vikings bring back Ameer Abdullah
………………….
As a depth piece, who can contribute as a 3rd Down RB and as a Kickoff Returner, Ameer Abdullah at or near the NFL Veteran Minimum level salary, provides pretty good value.
My guess is the foot injury that ended Abdullah's 2nd season with the Lions ( Game # 2 vs. the Titans in 2016 ) cost him some of his pre-injury skills. Prior to that injury, Abdullah looked like a long term solution as a starter for the Lions, providing he got his fumbling issues under control.

Jets sign Frank Gore
…………………….
Frank Gore turns 37 next week. It's nothing short of amazing that Gore is still in the NFL as a RB and at 36, contributed to a Bills team that had their best season in the early part of the 21st Century.
