J.D. McKissic brings versatility and familiarity with Darrell Bevell ( and his system ) to the Lions table. The Lions brass clearly sees him as an upgrade over Brandon Powell. McKissic probably is at least a short term upgrade because he's further advanced than Powell.

At this time, I haven't seen any report on who the Lions released to make room for McKissic. I like the McKissic addition by itself.

Two positives in particular regarding the J.D. McKissic addition is, one, his transition to the Lions Offense should be smooth. The learning curve for McKissic on Offense should be far less than with most players doing the Lions. Two, McKissic provides a lot of versatility. Including, what he should be able to contribute on Special Teams once he adapts to the Lions Special Teams systems. If relatively healthy, McKissic should provide good value with his Game Day ( 46 players ) roster spot. Especially, as the season moves on.

As much versatility and playmaking ability J.D. McKissic provides, by releasing Zach Zenner, C.J. Anderson is the only (proven) power RB on the Lions roster. A possible additional one is FB Nick Bawden.
