Detroit Lions' Sam Martin out to be 'the best Sam I can be' after 2 down seasons
………..
As long as Sam Martin remains on his current path, which includes being healthy, he should be on an NFL roster in the 2019 season. His salary could easily be a factor in whether he's on the Lions roster. Martin must demonstrate that he's clearly better than other viable combined punting, kickoff, and holding options to remain on the Lions roster.

Report: Lions punter Sam Martin restructures contract, takes a pay cut
……..
The pay cut agreement isn't surprising. Because Ryan Santaso did a pretty good job with Punting and did very well with Kickoffs, Sam Martin's contact leverage was lessened.
Sam Martin had a good pre-season. The only action he saw in Cleveland last night was holding on PATs and a FG attempt.

Sam Martin: Haven’t blinked an eye about free agency, won’t let pay cut alter decision
…………….
Directional kickoffs were what was emphasized by the coaches in most games. When relatively healthy, Martin is more than capable of having a much higher touchback percentage.
I think there's a better chance that Sam Martin re-signs with the Lions than Graham Glasgow and A'Shawn Robinson. Even with that, I think it's 50-50 at most Martin will be back with the Lions in 2020.
The reliable holding that Martin provides on FGs and PATs is something I hope the Lions brass factors in when deciding how to proceed with Martin.
