Lions and offensive coordinator Jim Bob Cooter are splitting ways
………………..
I think the decision by Matt Patricia was the best for both the Lions and Jim Bob Cooter. Unless Patricia has an Offensive Coordinator he believes is the type of fit that's conducive to Patricia's vision for the Lions Offense and overall team, the Lions aren't going to be consistent enough to have a realistic chance of going deep into the playoffs.
I wish Jim Bob Cooter the best. It wouldn't surprise me at all if Jim Caldwell hires both Jim Bob Cooter and Teryl Austin as Coordinators if Caldwell becomes an NFL HC this year.

Jim Bob Cooter out as Detroit Lions offensive coordinator…………………………….. I think it was the right decision for the Lions to retain Jim Bob Cooter for the 2018 season.
After a full season for Matt Patricia to determine whether Cooter was the OC he wanted moving forward, it's more than understandable that Patricia decided to move on from Cooter.
A strong case can be made that Patricia's decision on who to hire as the Lions next Offensive Coordinator is the most important Assistant Coach hiring decision he will ever make as Lions HC.

I, also, agree with the decision.
I, also, remember...or at least I’m pretty sure that I remember...that just a couple of seasons ago we had a thread that talked about Jim Bob Cooter as a potential head coach candidate.
NFL = Not For Long

Joe, even last year, Jim Bob Cooter was interviewed by the Lions for the team's Head Coach position. Regardless of whether that was just a courtesy interview ( it probably was ), Cooter probably would have received multiple NFL HC interviews this winter if the Lions Offense had a much better 2018 season than was the case.

David - I definitely remember that Jim Bob Cooter interviewed for the Lions’ head coaching position last year. What I thought I remembered was that a couple of years ago, when Matthew Stafford had one of his best seasons, he was being considered by OTHER teams as a head coaching candidate.

Joe, though there was plenty of speculation that one or more NFL teams had interest in Jim Bob Cooter to be their new HC back then, when the dust settled Cooter didn't get an intervIew.

Was this move expected? I know it caught me by surprise...

Funkytown, I thought there was at least a 75 % chance that Jim Bob Cooter wouldn't be back with the Lions for the 2019 season.
Matt Patricia decided to retain Cooter for the 2018 season, in part because Patricia didn't become Lions HC until a day after the Super Bowl. That late date limited the Lions options. Also, Cooter did have success with Matthew Stafford and the Lions passing game.
Because Cooter is more of a pass oriented coach and Patricia puts a greater emphasis on the running game, it seems best that the Lions and Cooter went their separate ways. I don't think Cooter would be a good fit for what Mike Zimmer wants for the Vikings Offense. Though I think Cooter would listen to Zimmer much more than apparently was the case with now former Vikings OC John Defilippo.

Jim Bob Cooter interviewing for Browns’ coordinator job…………………… If Jim Bob Cooter becomes the Browns Offensive Coordinator, it remains to be seen if he would be the Browns play caller or will Browns new HC Freddie Kitchens continue to call plays for the Browns? Kitchens' work in calling plays for the Browns after their mid season coaching shakeup very likely helped land Kitchens the Browns HC job.
