NFL Draft 2019: Lions select TE Isaac Nauta, DT P.J. Johnson to round out class
………….
This thread relates to the following thread:
NFL Draft Preview: Defensive Lineman ( 2019 )
P.J. Johnson is a good risk/ reward selection by the Lions with pick # 229 in Round 7. Johnson declared for the 2019 NFL Draft after his Red Shirt Junior season. He had a Pre-Draft visit with the Lions. He dropped down to 323 lbs. at the Arizona Pro Day last month. That led to a very good 40 time ( 5.07 ) for his size.
Though P.J. Johnson only did 20 reps of 225 lbs. at the Arizona Pro Day, he's demonstrated impressive functional upper body strength in games. The key problems for Johnson at the higher playing weight were limitations with bending his knees, playing with consistent leverage overall, and changing directions. Whether this will all improve enough if Johnson maintains the lower weight could be the key to whether he makes the Lions opening day 53 man roster. It wouldn't be surprising if Johnson has to go the Practice Squad route in order to eventually establish himself in the NFL.
The other players that went later in Round 7 that would have been tempting for me are Hawaii WR John Ursua , who Seattle took with pick # 236 ( he had a Pre-Draft visit with the Lions ), Idaho LB Kaden Elliss ( Luther Elliss' son ) , who New Orleans drafted with pick # 244, Morgan State T-G Joshua Mills, who Arizona drafted with pick # 248, and Oklahoma St. OLB / DE Joe Brailford, who Washington drafted with pick # 253. None jump out to the point that the Lions will be questioned on this end.

Lions earn B for drafting massive Arizona DT P.J. Johnson in Round 7
…………..
B as a low end post selection grade and B + as a high end grade is what I would give the Lions for selecting P.J. Johnson with pick # 229 in Round 7. There's plenty of upside. But it's realistically possible the Lions will risk putting him on waivers in order to sign him to the Practice Squad at the beginning of the 2019 regular season.
