Ty Johnson was the only one of the Lions 2019 Draft selections that wasn't on my radar screen this Spring. In looking at him in the last couple of days, I think this was a good selection by Bob Quinn at pick # 186 in Round 6. Though RB wasn't a Lions need going into the draft, Johnson has dimensions that are unique on the Lions roster. He has differential deluxe speed and has game changing kickoff return ability. Johnson had a Kickoff Return for a TD against Ohio State and Michigan over the last couple of years. He also has experience covering Punts.
For Johnson's size, he's a physical player who has had success picking up blitzes. Of course, he will be tested much more in the NFL. It remains to be seen what his success level will be both with blitz pickups and running inside the tackles.
Ty Johnson is an instinctive, patient, productive, and explosive runner. He hasn't had many opportunities catching the ball but has demonstrated good hands.
The only player that I probably would have preferred the Lions taking over Ty Johnson at this time is Oklahoma RB Rodney Anderson. The Bengals took Anderson late in Round 6 with pick # 211. Anderson is coming off a torn ACL and has missed more games than he has played because of injuries. Yet, in 2017 when he was able to stay relatively healthy much more often than not, Anderson performed like a high caliber RB prospect. The Lions could have kept Anderson on the PUP List, then eventually placed him on I.R. after the 3 week window. Then see where Anderson is health wise in the 2020 off-season. I would have liked the Lions to risk losing Ty Johnson before the team picked again with pick # 224, if Anderson was the pick #186 selection. Though I think Johnson was a good selection, maybe even more than that, the risk / reward with Anderson at pick # 186 seems even more favorable.
