The Lions brass can't assume that Kerby Joseph is going to be ready for the start of Training Camp or anytime soon after. Even before the information in the article in this message came out, it made sense for the Lions to draft a Safety and sign a viable veteran Safety in the days or weeks after the draft.

As an NFL Safety, even being mentioned with Ed Reed is a very high compliment. Kerby Joseph has far exceeded being a late 3rd Round Pick. It's going to be difficult for the Lions to re-sign BOTH Kerby Joseph and Brian Branch. Both Joseph and Branch have great ball skills. They are arguably the best Safety Pair in the NFL.

Kerby Joseph is having a tremendous season. Brian Branch isn't far behind Joseph. The Lions starting Safety pair is elite!

The area that Joseph has probably improved the most is in run Defense. That was on display vs. the Jaguars on a 2nd Down play, a no gainer by RB Travis Etienne. That led to a 3rd Down -1 yd loss for Etienne on a running play, which led to a Punt. The Lions led the game 7-3 at the time and went on to score a TD. The Jaguars weren't within double digits of the Lions on the scoreboard again.
