For a very long time, I have believed that Barry Sanders retired from the Lions before Training Camp in 1999 for at least 3 reasons:
1. He was dealing with a painful rib injury during the 1998 season. This, combined with career ending and even life altering injuries he witnessed happening to multiple teammates, likely was a major factor in the retirement decision.
2. He was unhappy about how the Lions organization treated some of his teammates, from a contract situation. Including, C Kevin Glover.
3. He didn't seem comfortable with Bobby Ross' style of coaching, which was much more taxing on Lions players than the coaching style Wayne Fontes used with the Lions.
