Report: Rams to release Leonard Floyd if no trade partner found
Report: Rams to release Leonard Floyd on Friday
Rams officially release Leonard Floyd, seven others
8 potential landing spots for Rams OLB Leonard Floyd
..........
Because Leonard Floyd was released, the Lions and any other team that might have interest in adding Floyd don't have to give the LA Rams trade compensation.
The pass rush skills and versatility of Leonard Floyd make him an intriguing option. That much more with Floyd playing against the run well for someone who weighs only 240 pounds.
So much depends on the open market for Floyd. If the Lions can sign him at a price that makes sense (he won't come cheap), the Lions probably should sign Floyd and move on from Romeo Okwara. While I respect the intangibles that Romeo Okwara brings to the table, I think Floyd is a higher end pass rusher. That much more, when factoring in the uncertainty of whether Okwara will ever get back to his pre-Achilles injury ability level. Floyd turns 31 in September. If the Lions can get two quality seasons from Floyd, that should help the team greatly with the Lions now having much greater expectations.

Lions free agency preview: Interior defensive line girth among team’s top needs
.....
The Lions have plenty of options, both at DE and at DT. The latter is currently a much greater need.
If the Lions make an external high priced FA investment, the Defensive Line is the most likely overall position unit the investment will be on.
Re-signing John Cominsky and Isaiah Buggs as parts of the Lions overall Defensive Line equation, providing the prices make sense, would be a good way to proceed. Both players bring intangibles that contributed significantly to the Lions finishing the 2022 season with a 9-8 record, after a 1-6 start to the season. This, in addition to their play on the field.
Because the supply of good options, especially at DT, seems high, I'm optimistic that the Lions can sign one or two DTs at favorable prices that fit in the Lions overall Salary Cap situation.

49ers, Javon Hargrave agree to deal
...........
This contract is a reflection of having QBs on their rookie contracts. With the Eagles needing salary cap space to sign QB Jalen Hurts to a contract extension, they couldn't realistically compete with the 49ers for Javon Hargrave's services.

Browns poach Dalvin Tomlinson from Vikings
Vikings to sign Marcus Davenport
............
A mixed day for the Vikings Defensive Line. Dalvin Tomlinson is a major loss for them. DT becomes a high priority need for the Vikings.
If Marcus Davenport is much healthier in 2023 than he was in 2022, he should have a much better season. Davenport has high end talent. He's more than capable of building on his 2021 season.
Once there's more information about the contracts, I plan on offering additional thoughts on these transactions.
