Carolina Panthers fire coach Matt Rhule after 1-4 start
..........
The Lions weren't the only team that had a horrible performance yesterday. The Panthers hosted a 49ers team coming from the West Coast, after playing Monday Night, and dealing with an assortment of injuries. It didn't matter, as the 49ers beat the Panthers by 22 points. It ended up costing Matt Rhule his job. He was never able to get enough out of the QB position with Carolina, with any consistency. Rhule's 7 year contract wasn't enough to save his job only 5 games into his 3rd season as HC. Dan Campbell could be in a similar position, especially a year from now (he has a 6 year contract), if his game management decisions don't noticeably improve on a consistent basis.
Steve Wilks has an uphill battle to have the Interim Head Coach Title lifted beyond this season. Panthers Owner David Tepper is amongst the financially wealthiest owners in the NFL. Paying Rhule NOT to coach the next 12 games and 4 years after that won't prevent Tepper from spending what it takes to try to hire the HC he believes is the best HC for the Carolina Panthers Franchise.
If the Panthers decide to try to trade players to position themselves better for the 2023 Draft, the Lions need to see what it would take to trade for DE Brian Burns and/ or DT Derrick Brown. These are two of the players the Lions passed up in back to back 1st Rounds of NFL Drafts, that could certainly help the Lions. Even knowing it will be costly salary cap wise to get one or both from the standpoint of their next contract. So much will depend on the trade compensation to acquire one or both of them.
