Malik Willis states his case to be the Lions pick at No. 2 overall ..........
The more Malik Willis' stock goes up, the more valuable pick # 2 becomes, if Willis isn't selected with pick # 1 (as a result of a trade down by the Jaguars). At this time, I still don't believe the Lions will be drafting Willis or any other QB with pick # 2. The Lions having the advance of coaching Willis during Senior Bowl week is reassuring from the standpoint of how the Lions decide to proceed, regarding Willis in the 2022 Draft.

2022 NFL combine: Detroit Lions staring down crowded group at top of this year’s ho-hum quarterback class
........
I don't expect David Blough to re-sign with the Lions. It's doubtful the Lions will give him a Tender Offer as a RFA. That would probably lead to Blough deciding to test the open market. After the Lions skipped over him last season when Jared Goff was out and Tim Boyle was struggling, the handwriting seems to be on the wall regarding Blough's future with the Lions.
If the Lions sign a veteran QB as a FA and he's expected to be the Lions # 2 QB in 2022, the team brass will probably be selective regarding drafting a QB.
It's possible, not probable that the Lions will trade down from pick # 2 AND draft a QB in the spot the Lions end up in Round 1 as a result of the trade.

Mel Kiper: No. 2 pick 'way too rich' for Detroit Lions to draft Malik Willis, other QBs
.....
This thread relates to the following thread:
Lions have Picks # 2 and # 32 in Round 1 of the 2022 Draft
detroit-lions-forum.proboards.com/thread/1392/lions-picks-round-2022-draft
I'm skeptical the Lions will be drafting a QB with the pick # 2, #32, or # 34 draft resource. Three reasons for this:
1. This isn't a strong QB draft crop. 2. The Lions brass likely wants to see Jared Goff perform in a full season with a better supporting cast and with Ben Johnson as Offensive Coordinator. It's not a given that any of the QBs in this draft crop will be better long term QBs than the Goff from late in the 2021 season. 3. If the Lions draft a QB with any of these draft resources, Goff is in essence a lame duck QB for the 2022 season.

Brad Holmes can “see some advantage” to having young QB behind Jared Goff
.....
There's an enormous difference between drafting a QB who isn't expected to be a long term starter with the team, as was the case with the LA Rams vs.the Lions using pick # 32 or # 34 on a QB. It remains to be seen what Goff's reaction will be if the Lions draft a QB that high in the draft (or even earlier in the draft.). Goff would likely be in his final season with the Lions if the Lions draft a QB with using any of these prime draft resources.

I guess the question you have to answer is whether Goff is the long-term answer at QB. Is he the guy that can get to the playoffs or win the division? If not, then the next question is whether one of the top qbs in this draft is likely to be? Yes? Draft him. No? Next year's top prospects are probably better.

There are definitely going to be QBs in drafts in the coming years that have more upside potential than Jared Goff. Combining this with Goff very likely going to be in a substantially better position to succeed in the 2022 season than in the 2021 season and that none of the QBs in the 2022 Draft are worth taking with pick # 2 (or even close to that spot) and that the QB options with pick # 32 or # pick # 34 don't look like good opportunity costs compared to seeing what transpires with Goff in the 2022 season, I hope the Lions decide not to draft a QB using any of these prime draft resources. With the plan to use the 2022 season to determine how to proceed with Goff beyond the season. If Goff builds on his play from late in the season, he might be good enough with a high caliber overall roster, that the Lions can be a Championship Caliber team with him as QB.
In the middle or late Rounds of the 2022 Draft, if there's a QB who is projected as at least a good # 2 QB prospect, who even by the second half of his rookie season would likely be an upgrade over Tim Boyle and David Blough, that's when it would be more appealing for the Lions to draft a QB this year. So much would depend on the players available at other positions as the draft moves on.

Malik Willis set to visit with Panthers, Falcons
........
Hopefully, one or more of these teams will be willing to give the Lions a trade offer to move up to pick # 2 that makes sense for the Lions to accept. I'm not expecting this to happen, even with the immense value that NFL teams place on the QB position.

But drafting a good developmental qb with the chance to be a solid backup would be a good plan. Someone like Carson Strong or Brock Purdy.

If not for the Right Knee injury concerns with Carson Strong, I would probably have been in favor of the Lions drafting him as early as pick # 66 in the early part of Round 3. Because of the knee issue, which could easily derail his chances of sticking in the NFL as a QB over the long haul, I hope the Lions don't consider drafting him until pick # 177 in the latter part of Round 5.
Unless one of the 5 QB's projected to go in the top 2 Rounds falls to the 3rd Round (Sam Howell comes to mind as a realistic possibility), I'm not optimistic that an eventual long term upper tier # 2 QB or better will be available from Round 3 on.
