Lions and Colts will both sit out most starters in preseason finale
........
The one Lions starting unit on either side of the ball that played in Pittsburgh last Saturday Night was the Defensive Backfield. At the very least, I don't anticipate Jeff Okudah or Tracy Walker to play vs. the Colts.
I'm anticipating Penei Sewell to play vs. the Colts. Especially, since he struggled both run blocking and in pass protection in Pittsburgh.

Detroit Lions vs. Indianapolis Colts: Make-or-break game for these 5 bubble players
.........
This thread relates to the following thread:
Lions projected 53 man roster ( 2021 season )
detroit-lions-forum.proboards.com/thread/1092/lions-projected-roster-2021-season
Bruce Hector is in the mix to survive the cutdown to 53 and making the Lions opening day 53 man roster. But like with Kevin Strong, John Penisini, and Miles Brown, it could come down to whether the Lions keep one or even two extra interior Defensive Lineman compared to other positions. If the roster decisions were based on the best 53 players regardless of position, all 4 players would at least survive the cutdown to 53.
Tom Kennedy would be ideal to be able to have on the Practice Squad. Whether this would be a practical way to proceed is the question?
I think the question at RB before the cutdown to 53 is complete is whether the Lions keep a 4th RB ( non FB ) on the roster? Jerman Jefferson will likely survive the cutdown to 53.
If Tavante Beckett continues to impress, the risk of exposing him to waivers would be too great.
If a roster decision comes down to Anthony Pittman and Jahlani Tavai, I strongly feel that Pittman would be the better option. Tavai needs a fresh start elsewhere to have a chance of even being a bottom part of a 53 man roster caliber player.

8 thoughts about the Lions roster entering the preseason finale
......
Last season, the Lions got a roster exemption from the NFL when S Jayron Kearse was suspended by the NFL for the first 3 games. I assumed that would be the case with Jashon Cornell this year. Why would be situations be different? This bears watching.
Unless Alize Mack or Brock Wright steps up big time in the pre-season finale against the Colts, it would make sense to only have 2 TEs on the roster Tuesday following the Cutdown to 53. Then assess the options after seeing which TEs were released by other teams.
The Lions backup Offensive Line situation is such that one or two Offensive Lineman not currently on the roster could very realistically be by October. With one change around 50-50 chance ( my opinion going into pre-season finale).
If the race at kicker isn't significantly altered tonight, I think Randy Bullock will be the Lions opening day Kicker.
At the very least, Tavante Beckett, Jerry Jacobs, and Javon McKinley are UDRFAs with a shot to survive the cutdown to 53....that I hope remain with the Lions one way or the other. Derrick Mills and Tommy Kraemer look like Practice Squad options, going into tonight's game.

5 bubble players to watch in Detroit Lions’ preseason finale against Colts
......
Being that Nick Williams was getting 1st team Defensive Line reps before he was out with COVID-19, I think it's more likely than not Williams will survive the cutdown to 53. It will be interesting to see if Williams is used in the final pre-season game and if he does play, how long and what part of the game Williams is in.
My guess at this time is the Lions will begin the regular season with the 3 QBs on the current 80 man roster. The COVID-19 situation is the main reason why I believe this will occur. It's realistically possible though that the Lions will only keep 2 QBs on the 53 man roster and sign Jordan Ta'amu to the P.S. if either Tim Boyle or David Blough ends up with another team.
