Detroit Lions training camp preview: D’Andre Swift primed for big things atop new-look backfield
........
A hip injury is indeed what was listed for D'Andre Swift on the Game 1 injury report against the Bears last season. It was reported that he had an unspecified leg muscle injury leading up to the first official .injury report.
Barring a new injury, one of the keys to the upcoming training camp and pre-season is making sure D'Andre Swift gets ample practice reps and some pre-season action. Finding a sensible balance of getting Swift ready for the season, without putting him at significantly greater risk, is easier said than done.

Detroit Lions to use preseason finale to take long look at running back depth
........
If the Lions decide to keep only 3 RBs ( not counting the FB position), two RBs will more likely than not be on the Practice Squad.
Going into the pre-season finale against the Colts, my take is Jermar Jefferson probably will survive the cut down to 53. If that happens, then it comes down to one of the other 3 RBs doing enough to convince Brad Holmes that it's too risky to expose the RB to waivers.

Sure, Jared Goff will badly need his RBs to be reliable targets.

Definitely!
It's safe to say that there isn't a team in the NFL that will be more dependant on RBs being reliable receivers this season than the Lions. That much more as long as WR Tyrell Williams is out with a concussion.
