Losing a little weight cannot hurt his performance, nevertheless, maximum speed is peaking around 18 years and slowly declines after that. My guess is that Tavai's best shot at appearing faster on the field is to improve his feel for the game and ability to read the offense, a one-gap defense should also help him by simplifying his reads ?

I think each of the components you mentioned can improve Jahlani Tavai's play speed to the point that at least gives him a chance of warranting a Lions roster spot. Maybe, much more, though a cautious approach appears best.
The sizeable amount of lost weight and better conditioning should help Tavai's speed and quickness to some extent. In Tavai's case, the net effect of the lost weight and better conditioning is likely greater than the speed decrease as one ages. This by itself isn't enough. Plenty of practice reps and game snaps are needed in the Lions new Defensive scheme, for Tavai.

A question for every Detroit Lions' position group ahead of training camp
Lighter, faster, more productive?
......
The mostly likely result is Jahlani Tavai will be in a battle fir one of the Lions final roster spots. With the Lions final pre-season game very important to his chances of surviving the Cutdown to 53 players and roster moves in the days that follow. Tavai is competing with players at most positions for a roster spot. This in addition to him competing with Lions LBs for a roster spot.

It's time for the Lions to end the Jahlani Tavai experiment
.........
This thread relates to the following thread:
Bills 16, Lions 15: Pre-season Game # 1 (2021 )
detroit-lions-forum.proboards.com/thread/1136/bills-lions-season-game-2021
Though I'm of the opinion that Jahlani Tavai's overall performance against the Bills was decent, I think his chances of surviving the cut down to 53 are at most around 45 %. At best, Tavai is the #6 ILB in the Lions pecking order. He's probably 7th. Either 5 or 6 will likely be on the Lions opening day roster.
If the Lions cut Tavai and he's not claimed off waivers, I would be surprised if either party wants to continue their football relationship. Tavai probably would sign a Practice Squad contract with another team.

The first 3 round picks should be reliable long-term prospects, with hindsight, Tavai was such a wasted draft pick

No question about it.
A draft pick taken in the 2nd Round shouldn't be at best a roster bubble player in his 3rd NFL season.

Why Detroit Lions' Jahlani Tavai is 'in a really good position' to make 53-man roster
.......
I'm not sure when Mark DeLeone spoke to the media, relative to if he knew that Shaun Dion Hamilton was headed to season ending I.R?.
I think the most likely scenario based on SDH's season ending injury is whether Jahiani Tavai will beat out Anthony Pittman for a roster spot? In essence, the # 5 Lions ILB spot. I think Jalen Reeves-Maybin will end up making the Lions 53 man roster, as one of the Lions backup ILBs. With rookie Derrick Barnes also in the top 4 LBs.
