Detroit Lions hire Darrell Bevell as offensive coordinator

It remains to be seen if the decision by Matt Patricia to hire Darrell Bevell as Offensive Coordinator will work out well for the Lions.  I like the decision though. 

Darrell Bevell has a wealth of experience as an NFL Offensive Coordinator, including calling plays.  Bevell has a background as a QB Coach.  As an Offensive Coordinator,  he helped the Seahawks get to two straight Super Bowls, the first that the Seahawks won. Bevell has proven that he can effectively direct an Offensive Attack that can run the ball effectively and an attack that can pass the ball effectively. His ability to adjust to respective opponents is also a huge plus.

Bob Quinn was at UConn in the late 1990's when Darrell Bevell was on the Huskies coaching staff.  Hence, there is a Lions connection with Bevell.

Adrian Peterson was drafted by the Vikings in the 2nd Round of the 2007 Draft.


Regarding Darrell Bevell, if given enough relatively healthy talent, he has a track record of success. Most importantly, in terms of the teams he was helping coach winning much more than they lost.

I like this decision. Darrel Bevell brings great experience and results. His success with offenses geared towards running the ball AND with those based on passing is very impressive; and just what the Lions need.

The reported info that Josh McDaniels was ready to hire Darrell Bevell as Offensive Coordinator, if McDaniels became the Colts HC, is re-assuring based on what the Lions are trying to accomplish on Offense and overall.

I don't have insight into the hire. However, I for one am ecstatic the offense is moving more in the direction of ball control and the run game. We have had way to many years of a pass happy offense. Can't sustain even as good a quarterback as Stafford is by one dimension. This is what the Lions have been for years.
Play the pass off the run. Defense, Defense, Defense. Even on offense.

The longer the Lions control the ball on Offense ( assuming the Lions doesn't turn over the ball and don't give up big plays on Special Teams, the better equipped the Lions Defense will be to help the Lions win. All 3 units must compliment each other. The NFL is the ultimate TEAM sport league.

Patriots Offensive Coordinator Josh McDaniels has been able to adapt to different parameters much more often than not. If Darrell Bevell has enough available relatively healthy talent on Offense, there's reason for optimism with the Lions Offense.

If the Lions would have hire an Offensive Coordinator with connections to Matt Patricia, criticism of the decision likely would have been higher than it was in the hiring of Darrell Bevell.

New Lions playcaller Darrell Bevell is going against the NFL grain. He’s OK with that.

The Rams won the NFC West Title in the 2017 season but lost at home to the Falcons in the first round of the playoffs.

Though I believe the Lions will put a heavy emphasis in running the ball in many games, I believe much like with the Patriots, the opposition Defense will dictate what the Lions strategy will be through a given game.

Even though tbe Lions rushing numbers are not close to where they will need to be as the season moves along, there is a positive that jumps up. The high concentration of the opposition against the run, is helping the passing game. And at times slowing down the opposition pass rush. Part of the reason the Lions haven't given up a sack in the last 2 games is the heavy focus against the Lions rushing attack.

Great article under the very difficult circumstance of the unexpected passing of Brett Favre's Dad Irv in 2003. I can't recall a QB and an Offense playing a more inspired game than Brett Favre and the Packers did that Monday Night in Oakland.

Lions OC Darrell Bevell defends fourth-down playcall

I can't think of any Short Yardage situation in this game that the Lions Running game was effective to the point of making a conversion.

The play call in this situation ranks with the long pass the Lions threw on 3rd Down in Arizona ( following the time out that wiped out a likely game clinching 1st Down. ) as the worst play call Darrell Bevell made in the 1st half of the season.
