Matt Patricia has no choice but to downplay the absence of both players. Other than the June Mandatory Minicamp, all of the off-season practices and workouts are voluntary. There's no question in my mind that it's unsetting to Patricia that both players are not participating in the OTAs and overall classroom work.

I'm more concerned with Darius Slay absent than Damon Harrison. At least with Harrison, he has a track record of being highly productive, hitting the ground running, after being traded from the Giants to the Lions. In the case of Slay, there's no telling how much, if at all, missed practices will have on him this season.

I think the solution that would be amongst the best course of action is to offer more guaranteed money within the existing contracts, with the plan to discuss contract extensions no later than the spring of next off-season.

I understand the logic in Matt Patricia's comments. However, it remains to be seen if there's something else that heavily contributed to Darius Slay playing in the pre-season opener. I don't agree with Patricia's decision to use Slay in this game.

A strong case can be made that DeAndre Hopkins is the best route runner, best body control, and best hands WR currently in the NFL. Practicing against Hopkins should help Darius Slay and any other Lions DB in coverage against him.

To Darius Slay's credit, he has a history of making interceptions when a game was on tbe line. Two other games that come to mind are tbe Thanksgiving Day game vs. Minnesota in 2016( that Slay referred to ) and in Game # 5 that season against Carson Wentz and the Eagles. That was Wentz' first loss as a starting QB, after 3 wins before the Eagles bye. The Lions play tbe Eagles next Sunday for tbe first tome since Slay sealed the game against them in Detroit.

Aaron Rodgers was limited by a knee injury in the October game in Detroit last season. Rodgers was out because of injury in the Lions two games vs. the Packers in the 2017 season.

The last time Rodgers was relatively healthy entering a game against the Lions was the 2016 regular season finale in Detroit on Sunday Night Football. Rodgers was the # 1 difference maker in the Packers win, which enabled them to beat out the Lions for the NFC North Title.

Even though Rodgers won't have Devante Adams this coming Monday Night, Rodgers is still more than capable of being the deciding factor in a Packers victory again. The Lions have to keep him in contain. We saw what happened on Thursday Night Football in early December 2015 when Rodgers broke contain on the final play from scrimmage in the Packers-Lions game in Detroit.
