Detroit Lions banking on speed-infused receiver room to revive Jared Goff’s deep ball ......
This new thread is a continuation of the following thread:
Lions Wide Receivers situation ( 2020 season )
detroit-lions-forum.proboards.com/thread/700/lions-wide-receivers-situation-season
A correction in the current version of the article. Tyrell Williams has 3,181 career yards. Not counting postseason numbers.
Two things in particular jump out:
1. Based on everything that has transpired since it became know that Jared Goff would be traded to the Lions as part of the Matthew Stafford trade to the LA Rams ( including Brad Holmes' comments in this article ), I now believe that there's at most a 10% chance the Lions are draft a QB with the pick # 7 draft resource. That includes trading up or down with the pick. Most likely, the Lions won't be drafting a QB in 2021 at any point of the draft that is viewed as a long term starter answer at the position.
2. Even if as expected the Lions add at least one WR ( I'm including TE Kyle Pitts ) in the first 3 Rounds of the draft, at the very least, the Lions are counting on Tyrell Williams to be an important piece to the Lions Offense in the 2021 season.

PFF's wide receiver rankings show the NFC North is loaded...except for the Lions
........
I'm cautiously optimistic the Lions WR corp will exceed expectations and the Lions pass Defense will be much better than in the 2020 season. But the reality is the Lions will probably have to make at least one major addition at WR in 2022, even if all of the WRs on the current roster return. The same, regarding Safety.

A question for every Detroit Lions' position group ahead of training camp
Who becomes Goff's go-to? .........
My optimism certainly didn't increase for the Lions WR corp since my previous comments in this thread.
Health is my main concern regarding Tyrell Williams because he's missed the entire 2020 because of a shoulder injury. If he stays relatively healthy much more often than not in the 2021 season, I think he will warrant being a starter.
Breshad Perriman is a much greater overall question mark.
My gut feeling at this time is Quintez Cephus is going to make the Lions 53 man roster and be heavily in the mix to start opposite Tyrell Williams. Cephus came on strong late in the 2020 season as a rookie and built on that this off-season with a new coaching staff and starting QB.

Why the Lions 2021 plan at WR could be their biggest downfall
........
The top concern by far on this end regarding the Lions WR situation is making a long term evaluation / assessment on Jared Goff. I'm not anticipating the Lions being a playoff team in the 2021 season or seriously competing even for the # 7 NFC Playoff seed. More importantly than the W-L results in the 2021 season is making a good long term QB decision.

Detroit Lions assistant Antwaan Randle El defends WR corps: 'We'll surprise some people'
........
I'm not sure to what extent Antwaan Randle El is confident in the Lions WR corp and to what extent he wants to build confidence for the Lions WR corp?
It remains to be seen how much the head injury Quentez Cephus is dealing with will set him back in his attempt to make the Lions 53 man roster? And to what extent the injury will affect Cephus' playing time & performance level early in the regular season ( if he's still with the team)? It sounds like Randle El will be lobbying for Cephus to be on the Lions 53 man roster when the regular season begins.

Receiver job remains up for grabs heading into Lions’ preseason finale against Colts
......
None of the WRs competing for the final WR spot or two appear to offer enough on Special Teams. Tom Kennedy can at least provide a backup Punt Returner option. The greater obstacle for Kennedy is his size limits his blocking potential. With Kennedy being more quick than fast, he doesn't seem to provide enough value compared to other options. Including, at other positions.
