Detroit Lions cut Zach Zenner, could be going light at running back
……
This thread is a continuation of the following thread:
detroit-lions-forum.proboards.com/thread/145/lions-sign-zach-zenner-contract
I didn't see this coming. Chances are very few others did as well.
Zach Zenner went from someone who some saw a contender for the Lions # 2 RB job to being released in the days leading up to the cutdown to 53. For a team that's putting a great emphasis on running the ball, the Lions decision to release Zenner is questionable at best. Zenner isn't flashy but he's more reliable than most NFL established RBs. With versatility as a receiver, blitz protector, and on Special teams, in addition to being a productive rusher, Zenner seemed to fit the mold for Bob Quinn and Matt Patricia.
I wish Zach Zenner the best moving forward. That much more in the medical field.

Detroit Lions release Zach Zenner, likely going light at RB position
…..
Mark Thompson has a much better chance of surviving the cutdown to 53 than he did when Zach Zenner was on the Lions roster. The odds are still against Thompson to be on the Lions roster this coming Saturday Night. But Thompson can make a strong case for a roster spot if he has an impact pre-season finale like Tion Green did two seasons ago.
If the Lions only keep 3 RBs and a FB on the 53 man roster, it would make plenty of sense for the Lions to sign 2 RBs to the Practice Squad.

I just don’t know what Zach Zenner needs to do to earn respect from this organization. I’m not as surprised by this move as you are David, taking the past into consideration; but still very disappointed.

Joe, you raise a great point. Zach Zenner had a 5.1 yard per carry in the pre-season. This without a breakaway long run. Hence, the average demonstrates consistency at an impressive production level. Yet, this wasn't good enough for Bob Quinn and Matt Patricia.
If injuries pile up at RB, the Lions easily could regret the decision to move on from Zach Zenner.
