Detroit Lions cut RB Theo Riddick, save $3.55 million in cap space
………………………
This new thread relates to the following thread:
Lions Running Backs situation ( 2019 season )
The release of Theo Riddick by the Lions is definitely not a surprise. Especially, when factoring in his contract and the improved Lions Running Back situation.
Mostly likely, the Lions brass believes that Ty Johnson can help the Lions as a runner and receiver early in the regular season. Kerryon Johnson probably will see plenty of action in expected passing situations. Zach Zenner also will probably be used in some expected passing situations.
By releasing Theo Riddick now instead of when the Lions get down to 53 players, it gives him a better chance of adjusting to the system and personnel of the team he signs with.
Theo Riddick far exceeded my expectations for him when the Lions drafted him in Round 6 of the 2013 Draft. He probably was the Lions best receiving RB I have seen over the decades. He definitely was a differential player in that facet of play for a few seasons. I wish Theo Riddick and his family well.

No surprise here either, In fact, in another thread, I posted that I thought there was a better chance of Theo Riddick NOT being on the team than being on the team at the start of the regular season. I am a little surprised, however, that it happened this early; I wasn’t expecting that.
As David said, it DOES give Riddick more time to acclimate to his new team and their system. PLUS, it provides more reps for the RBs remaining on the roster, as they learn the team’s own new offensive scheme.

Joe, the additional reps for the Lions other RBs should be especially helpful in the development of Ty Johnson. Every additional rep Johnson gets should enhance the chances of him being ready to contribute at RB an effective level early in the regular season.
