NFL Draft 2019: Lions select TE Isaac Nauta, DT P.J. Johnson to round out class
…………….
This thread relates to the following thread:
NFL Draft Preview:Tight Ends ( 2019 )
Very good decision by Bob Quinn in selecting TE Isaac Nauta with Pick # 224 in Round 7 for the Lions. Though the Lions have plenty of options at TE, Nauta is a value pick at this point of the draft. Nauta's potential to also be an H-Back and FB adds to his value.
A subpar and very disappointing Combine by Nauta on physical ability tests led to his massive draft fall. Before the Combine, Nauta was projected as a 2nd or 3rd Round player. Nauta is the type of player who displays better athletic skills in games than he does at Combine type settings. He's not a consistent route runner but he often got open against man to man and zone coverage. Nauta is tough in traffic, catching the ball well. He occasionally looks up field before securing the ball. A good power runner after the catch.
Isaac Nauta is somewhat undersized weight wise ( 244 lbs. ). Yet, he's a very willing blocker. Nauta needs to add bulk and strength if he's going to be effective as an Inline Blocker. His leadership is a major plus as well. High caliber football character.
Even if Nauta doesn't make the opening day 53 man roster, he should help push others competing for TE jobs. No regrets with this draft selection.

A better pick @ #224. I like his ability to play H-back and FB. I think he’s a keeper.

Joe, at the very least, I think Isaac Nauta will be on an NFL 53 man roster at some point in his rookie season.

Don’t sleep on rookie Lions TE Isaac Nauta
……………………
When the Lions brass is making the decisions to get down to 53 players, Isaac Nauta probably will be one of the 53 best players on the Lions roster. Whether that is enough for him to survive the cutdown to 53 remains to be seen. Injuries could easily factor into the bottom part of the Lions roster. Including, during the regular season.
