2019 NFL draft: Detroit Lions trade down, add Clemson DE Austin Bryant
…………..
This thread relates to the following thread:
NFL Draft Preview: Defensive Lineman ( 2019 )
Great job by Bob Quinn with the trade down with the Falcons from Pick # 111 to Pick # 117. Getting a much better 6th Round pick than the one the Lions traded to the Vikings in Round 3 is impressive to say the least. Usually, the difference in trade compensation when a trade is made a Round later is less in value.
The only two players that interested me that went from pick # 111 to pick # 116 were G Dru Samia and S Amani Hooker. I doubt the Lions were going to take another Safety so soon after drafting Will Harris with pick # 81 in Round 3. I rather have Austin Bryant and pick # 114 in Round 6 than Samia. The two players that the Lions passed up before picking again that would have been at tempting are C-G Michael Jordan and S Deionte Thompson. Much like with Hooker, I doubt Thompson was a serious consideration with pick # 117.
I give the Austin Bryant pick by itself in the range of a B + to a B. With the trade compensation, it's at least an A-.
Austin Bryant has long arm, speed, quickness, and good movement skills. He definitely has a huge amount of toughness and desire. He's definitely a team oriented player.
With added weight room strength, using better leverage, developing more pass rush moves using his hands, and further experience to improve his playing instincts, Bryant will likely become a winning starter DE. His experience playing on the 2018 season National Champion can only help the Lions.

Joe, I agree that the Austin Bryant selection is in the running for the best "value" pick by the Lions. Especially, with the trade down factored in.

Lions fourth-rounder Austin Bryant is tougher than you
……….
Because Austin Bryant is coming off a torn pectoral muscle / surgery, he's not going to be able to spend the time in the weight room this off-season that he needs. My expectations for Bryant as a rookie are cautious. Hopefully, he won't have any workout/ physical training limitations next off-season and beyond.

Lions sign four draft picks
Fourth-round defensive end Austin Bryant was the highest selection in that group.
The Lions also signed sixth-round running back Ty Johnson, seventh-round tight end Isaac Nauta and seventh-round defensive tackle PJ Johnson.
……………..
Glad to see this. It's better that players don't have potential distractions. With rookies, it's even more pronounced.

Detroit Lions rookie Austin Bryant, injured, but 'when my time comes, I’ll be ready'
……………
The Lions placed Austin Bryant on short term I.R. after Logan Thomas was re-signed. Tnis following J.D. McKissic being claimed off waivers from tbe Seahawks.
Tbe Lions official website still lists Austin Bryant as a DE, not as a LB. He probably is currently projected to play the Devon Kennard OLB role, in essence being a hybrid OLB / DE.
The Lions should proceed with caution with Bryant. It's best that he doesn't play of even practice this regular season if the risk of a relapse with the pectoral injury isn't low.
