Why now for the Jared Goff deal?
..........
The longer Jared Goff didn't sign a contract extension with the Lions, the more of a distraction the situation could have become for both parties.

Jared Goff extension won’t make Dak Prescott deal any cheaper
........
The Lions proactive approach with massive contract extensions, once the Lions determine this is a player the Lions prioritize retaining for multiple more seasons, does indeed make a great amount of sense. This, both from a cost standpoint, and the player seeing that the Lions are willing to make the enormous commitment to him.

Jared Goff praises Lions for rewarding their key players
........
While what Jared Goff expressed is the case for players the Lions consider top priorities, it's going to be more and more difficult for the Lions to keep some players that ideally the Lions would prefer to re-sign. Jonah Jackson, who signed with the LA Rams as an UFA back in March, fit this description.
