Round 1: CB Terrion Arnold (Alabama) : Pick # 24 ( 2024 )

Of the four Day 2 Options that Justin Rogers listed, Ennis Rakestraw Jr is the one who I believe has the best chance of ending up with the Lions somewhere in Round 2. I don't think the Lions are going to select him with Pick # 29, mostly because of his injury history. Size and lack of interceptions (he only had 1 in 36 games with Missouri (though he had 3 forced fumbles) probably will also contribute to the Lions not taking him at # 29. However, in a trade down from # 29, the Lions probably would be at least somewhat more comfortable drafting Rakestraw. I would be surprised if the Lions drafted any of the other 3 CBs in Round 2. Even with Pick # 73, in Round 3, I have doubts the Lions would take any of the other CBs.
If given the choice, I rather the Lions end up with either Missouri CB Kris Abrams-Draine or CB Renardo Green in Round 3 than the Lions taking Ennis Rakestraw Jr in Round 2. Rakestraw has long arms for a CB and is an aggressive run supporter & tackler, but is inconsistent as a tackler. Rakestraw is also prone to penalties in coverage or plays that could easily be flagged. That's probably correctable. Yet, his history of injuries, combined with below average size, and lack of interceptions, are major concerns.
Ennis Rakestraw will probably be drafted somewhere in Round 2. At Pick # 61, in the latter part of Round 2, the risk/ reward with Rakestraw seems even or slightly on the favorable side. Drafting him in the first half of Round 2 seems too risky. With Pick # 29, the risk appears to be much too great.

In the 'Round 2 & Round 3 options for the Lions ( 2024) thread, I didn't list Ennis Rakestraw Jr. as a preferred option for Day 2 or Day 3 because I didn't think Rakestraw Jr. was a player the Lions would seriously consider in Round 2. This, after the Lions traded up for CB Terrian Arnold in Round 1. I didn't believe Rakestraw would last to Round 3. In the 4 articles I posted in that thread about Day 2 options for the Lions, none of them mentioned Rakestraw. I'm confident practically no one outside the Lions organization or close to Rakestraw was anticipating Rakestraw being an option at # 61, after the Lions selected Arnold at # 24.
In my 3 Round 3 Mock Draft, I had Rakestraw going to the Giants with Pick # 47.

The consensus was that Rakestraw would be taken somewhere in the first half of Round 2.
What I didn't consider during the day on Friday which players were the best options for the Lions in Round 2 and 3 was the Slot CB experience Rakestraw had with Missouri. Without seeing or hearing any of Brad Holmes' comments about the Rakestraw selection yet, what came to mind is the Lions very likely see Rakestraw as a player who can be effective at both Outside CB and in the Slot. Terrion Arnold also has that versatility, though my guess is the Lions prefer to use him Outside most of the time. The versatility that Rakestraw should give the Lions as a Slot CB, is the Lions can use Brian Branch at Safety when there's an injury at Safety or in specific situations (possibly against certain opponents) that the Lions Defensive Coaches believe Branch would maximized. The other benefit to Rakestraw's experience and abilities as a Slot CB is that he could easily emerge as the Lions best option as a Slot CB if Branch is injured. This is factoring Arnold being maximized as an Outside CB.
When also considering that Rakestraw has around 250 Special Teams Coverage and has 3 Tackles as a Punt Gunner during his time with Missouri and that no other player still available with Pick # 61 either jumped out as a player I thought was a noticeably better option, I'm comfortable with the Lions selecting Rakestraw with Pick # 61. Trading down might have been a better option but I don't know what offers, if any, were on the table for the Lions to consider.
