I expressed the following in the 'NFL Draft Preview: Wide Receivers ( 2024 )' thread:
At this time, I believe the Lions would have to draft Roman Wilson at the latest in the range of the 3rd Round Pick the Lions acquired from the Vikings in the T.J. Hockenson trade. He might not even last to the Lions 2nd Round Pick, which is in the latter part of Round 2. Because of the versatility Wilson provides on Offense and that he's more polished than the vast majority of higher end NFL WR Draft Prospects, he's probably worth seriously considering by the Lions with the team's 2nd Round Pick.
Being that the Lions met with Roman Wilson multiple times in the pre-draft period, that Wilson has the potential to be a great fit for Jared Goff, and would be a good culture fit for the Lions, I think the Lions interest in Wilson is genuine. While I would be surprised (not shocked) if the Lions drafted Wilson with Pick # 29 in Round 1, I wouldn't be surprised if the Lions drafted in anywhere in Round 2. So much could depend on whether the Lions brass believes that Wilson would be an asset as an outside WR, in addition to the slot?
While Wilson has very good separation ability, he needs improvement and more consistency with route running. His size and playing strength are concerns, though Wilson is very competitive in going for the ball, after the catch, and as a blocker. Wilson only had 1 drop on 67 targets in the 2023 season.
If Roman Wilson drops to Pick # 61, in the latter part of Round 2, he probably would be at or near the top of the Lions preference list, if the Lions haven't selected a WR earlier in the draft.
