Falcons request head coaching interview with Lions OC Ben Johnson

There are now 8 NFL HC openings, with the latest being New England after Patriots owner Bob Kraft and HC Bill Belichick agreed to part waves.
Atlanta is one of the better NFL HC openings in the 2024 NFL Coaching Cycle. Falcons Owner Arthur Blank is willing to spend money to help give the Falcons their best chance of success. In at least the vast majority of situations, Blank lets his football people make the football decisions with the Falcons. This has the very realistic potential to be a good landing spot for Ben Johnson.

What Ben Johnson’s offense and tutelage has been able to do for Jared Goff has been amazing. In the Stafford trade, Goff was expected to be a placeholder until the Lions drafted their guy. Now the clearly limited passer is running one of the league’s best offenses.

IMHO, the Cowboys aren't going to hire Ben Johnson as HC in this coaching cycle. Jerry Jones will probably go with someone with winning HC experience and./ or someone who has been with the Cowboys at some point. Having said this, if Ben Johnson is viewed by NFL teams looking for a new coach the way this Cowboys writer views Johnson, he should have at least 2 NFL HC job offers.

Seattle and Ben Johnson seem like a good match. The Seahawks have plenty of talent on both sides of the ball. Ben Johnson has been able to get good to very good results with Jared Goff. It would be interesting to see if he can do the same with Geno Smith or Drew Lock.

Another team passes on Lions coordinators, as only 2 head coaching jobs remain

Good decision by the Falcons in hiring Raheem Morris as their new Head Coach. Raheem Morris did a good job as Falcons Interim HC and got more out of the LA Rams Defense this year than even the most optimistic Rams fan probably could have hoped for.
If Ben Johnson becomes the Washington HC (or the Seattle Seahawks HC), a huge additional concern for the Lions besides needing to replace Johnson is he could attempt to hire Lions Offensive Line Coach Hank Fraley his Offensive Coordinator. Fraley is amongst the best Offensive Line Coaches in the NFL. He's done a remarkable job with the Lions with that unit.
