I'm comfortable with the terms of both trade downs by the Lions, in terms of the trade compensation itself. I'm comfortable with the entire trade down from Pick # 63 to Pick # 68 with the Broncos. Denver got back Pick # 183, in Round 6, which was the Pick the Lions acquired in the Trinity Benson trade in the summer of 2021.
My guess is the Lions would have drafted one of the players that were selected from Pick # 55 to Pick # 62. With Florida G O'Cyrus Torrence (who the Bills drafted with Pick # 59) by far the most likely player the Lions would have drafted, of the 8 players. SMU WR Rashee Rice, who the Chiefs drafted with Pick # 55, and Miami (Fla) CB Tyrique Stephenson, who the Bears drafted with Pick # 56, are the only two other players I could envision to some extent the Lions would have drafted over Torrence. This, assuming the Lions were going to draft one of those players.
It's realistically possible that with Pick # 68, two of the 5 players (who were selected from Picks # 63 to Pick #67) the Lions would have drafted, if available, (other than Tennessee QB Hendon Hooker, the eventual selection), were Oklahoma WR Marvin Mims Jr. (Chiefs Pick # 63), and South Carolina DT Zacch Pickens (Bears Pick #64, which began Round 3). It's also realistically possible that the Lions wouldn't have drafted either player if Hooker was gone. Considering how much (a lot) the Lions gave the Cardinals to trade up to Pick # 96, in Round 3, in order for the Lions to draft Western Kentucky DT Broderic Martin, it wouldn't surprise me if Martin would have been the player the Lions would have selected if Hooker was selected. Clearly, the Lions were comfortable risking losing Hooker, otherwise he would have been selected by the Lions with Pick # 63.
O'Cyrus Torrence was unexpected (to most, including me) still available with Pick # 55. Ultimately, the end result, unless it becomes clear that Torrence wasn't who the Lions would have taken at # 63, if available, is the Lions passing on a likely long-term solution at Guard....for a QB (+ other draft compensation) who could be the long term answer at QB, a good # 2 QB solution, or a QB the Lions will want to move on from in 2 or 3 years. With the trade compensation the Lions gained factored in, I'm uncertain (at least for now) which outcome I would have preferred.
