The Lions have to assume that anything positive the Lions get from Levi Onwuzurike on the field in game action is a plus. Unfortunately, the Lions need a viable plan without Onwuzurike. Even if he is able to begin the regular season, the risk factor with Levi O. remains high.

My guess is the Lions coaches are going to proceed cautiously with Levi Onwuzurike this summer, compared to most other non-vested veteran players on the Lions roster.

If Levi Onwuzurike remains relatively healthy through tonight's pre-season finale at Carolina and leading up to the Cutdown to 53 on Tuesday Afternoon at 4:00PM ET, I think there's a good chance he will be on the Lions initial 53 man roster. A concern is that Broderic Martin is a development player. With Levi O. still in the process of rounding into forum, the Lions would have 2 DTs that could reduce the Lions chances of winning. Even factoring in the versatility of Aidan Hutchinson, John Cominsky, Josh Paschal, and Romeo Okwara (if he's on the 53 man roster) to play inside in expected passing situations, the Lions could end up with not enough good DT options on Early Downs/ Short Yardage, and Goalline situations. This is a primary reason why it would make sense for the Lions to keep Benito Jones on the 53 man roster.

Levi Onwuzurike stepped up big time in the pre-season finale at Carolina. To the point that if Levi O. stays on his current course, he could very realistically be a difference maker for the Lions in multiple games moving forward.
