I expressed the following in the 'NFL Free Agency Preview: Wide Receivers ( 2023 )' thread:
DJ Chark isn't going to be easy to replace. Jaguars UFA / former Lions WR Marvin Jones is still available on the open market but he doesn't have the speed to keep an Opposing Defense playing closer to the line of scrimmage more often. Jets WR Corey Davis would be worth the Lions looking at closely, if he's a salary cap casualty in the coming weeks. The draft is an option, as early as a Round 1 selection. The learning curve for a rookie WR is concerning though.
Having said this, Marvin Jones has high caliber ball skills, is a very good route runner, and has great intangibles. If the Lions end up signing Marvin Jones, I think he would be very helpful in the development of Jamison Williams and a WR the Lions end up drafting this season (assuming the Lions draft a WR).
The contract that Marvin Jones agreed to with the Lions is one that I'm comfortable with.
Quintez Cephus is also in the mix at WR for the Lions.
I'm still anticipating the Lions drafting a WR. But at or near what point of the draft this will occur is a difficult question to predict the answer.
Welcome Back, Marvin!
