The news that DJ Chark is leaving the Lions is disappointing but not surprising. It seems evident that the Lions brass didn't value DJ Chark enough from a salary cap standpoint to offer Chark a contract that would have led to him re-signing with the Lions.

DJ Chark isn't going to be easy to replace. Jaguars UFA / former Lions WR Marvin Jones is still available on the open market but he doesn't have the speed to keep an Opposing Defense playing closer to the line of scrimmage more often. Jets WR Corey Davis would be worth the Lions looking at closely, if he's a salary cap casualty in the coming weeks. The draft is an option, as early as a Round 1 selection. The learning curve for a rookie WR is concerning though.

I wish DJ Chark the best of health moving forward and success when it doesn't hurt the Lions. Chark was a huge part of the Lions turnaround in the 2nd half of the 2022 season.

If this is the contract DJ Chark will be signing with the Panthers, it reinforces my opinion that the Lions brass didn't value DJ Chark enough from a salary cap standpoint, to offer Chark a contract that would have led to him re-signing with the Lions. Part of this relates to the financial commitment it will take for the Lions to sign Amon-Ra St. Brown to a long term contract extension and the cost to retain some other key players. Part of this also could easily be concern about Chark being relatively healthy often enough. Yet, this was a contract the Lions easily could have significantly topped.

There's no question on this end that the ongoing ankle injury concerns with DJ Chark kept the contract offers to him substantially lower than if he didn't have a history of injuries to the ankle.
