I'm surprised, not shocked that the Lions and Jaamal Williams didn't come to a contract agreement.

One question that comes to mind is whether Jaamal Williams priced himself out of Detroit? Or whether the Lions brass came to the conclusion that David Montgomery, under the contract terms he agreed to, is the Lions best option, even if Williams' asking price was in the ballpark the Lions would have been comfortable with?

David Montgomery didn't come cheap. I didn't expect the Lions to invest in a FA RB this year with the numbers on the surface that Montgomery agreed to with Detroit. Having said that, Montgomery is a good all around RB, with the exception of not being a breakaway RB (though I recall a long run in Detroit and a more recent one in Green Bay) for the most part.

It remains to be seen what the Lions plans are for D'Andre Swift. Montgomery can handle the load of a # 1 RB, the role he was in with the Bears.

Breaking down David Montgomery’s contract details with the Lions

For the 2023 season, the contract is favorable for the Lions.

For the 2024 season, the contract isn't favorable for the Lions, unless David Montgomery has a Pro Bowl Caliber season, or close to that level.

Montgomery probably will need to have at least close to a Pro Bowl caliber 2024 season to return to the Lions for the 2025 season, under the current terms of his contract with the Lions.

There's conflicting information on the Lions best offer to Jaamal Williams.

While David Montgomery will almost certainly see more lighter boxes with the Lions than did with the Bears the last couple of seasons, he won't have the benefit with the Lions of Justin Fields as a runner being a focal point of opposing Defenses.

It's much more likely than not that David Montgomery will be with the Lions for at least 2 seasons.

What stands out as much as anything regarding the interest of the Vikings reportedly had in signing David Montgomery as an UFA, is they might be moving on from Dalvin Cook this off-season.
