Here's why Iowa TE T.J. Hockenson makes sense for Lions in NFL draft
………………………
I rather the Lions not take a TE with pick # 8. However, if it comes down to DT Ed Oliver and TE T.J. Hockenson, I prefer the Lions to take Hockenson.
Oliver had a disappointing Junior Season this past Summer and Fall. There were issues between him and some of the Houston coaches. He doesn't remotely have the football character of Aaron Donald. Hockenson is a much safer choice.

Detroit Lions 2019 NFL Draft prospect: Iowa TE T.J. Hockenson
…………..
If the Lions want T.J. Hockenson and he's clearly the highest rated non QB at # 8, the risk of trading down with the hope of still being able to draft him seems too great. Having said, I hope there is a scenario that ends up being the Lions result in Round 1 that exceeds the value of Hockenson to the Lions in the # 8 spot.

Lions 2019 draft preview: It's a good year to need a tight end
…………………………………..
Kahale Warring's draft stock seems to have gone up substantially since the beginning of the Combine. If Warring is available with pick # 88 in Round 3 and the Lions haven't addressed TE in tbe draft, he could realistically amongst the Lions best options. Warring's upside potential as a complete TE is high.
Kaden Smith had a disappointing Combine. He ran a 4.92 40, which was a reflection of far less athletic test results than expected. The Lions very likely went back to Smith's game tapes. If Smith is still available in Round 5, the team that drafts him easily could end up with one of the best value selections of the draft.
