Detroit Lions free agency preview: All eyes on running back Jamaal Williams
..........
This new thread relates to the following thread:
Jaamal Williams :Free Agent Info ( 2023 season )
detroit-lions-forum.proboards.com/thread/1671/jaamal-williams-free-agent-season
Ideally, the Lions will end up re-signing Jaamal Williams at a price that both parties are comfortable with. Then, the Lions use a draft pick in the 2nd, 3rd, or 4th Round (currently the Lions don't have a draft pick) to help address the position unit for both the short and long term. At a modest price, Justin Jackson would be worth re-signing as well.
Of the UFA RBs that weren't tagged, Rashaad Penny has the most high end ability (assuming he didn't lose significant ability from the broken fibula that ended his 2022 season). Penny was a force against the Lions, both in the 2021 season and the 2022 season. Unfortunately, Penny has been plagued by injuries. A one year prove it type of contract with Penny, if the Lions medical staff gives the green light, is well worth considering if the opportunity presents itself. Especially, if Williams is heading elsewhere.
Alexander Mattison, as a # 2 RB, might be the best value option.

Commanders release J.D. McKissic, tender Jeremy Reaves
.........
Though the Lions have a new regime since J.D. McKissic was with the team in the 2019 season, at a team friendly price, he's someone I hope the Lions give serious consideration to signing. McKissic has displayed difference making receiving skills and can be used as a change of pace rusher.
