The Lions needed more bulk strength in the Defensive Line interior. Hence, this very likely was a key factor in the Lions claiming Jones off waivers.
In order to add Benito Jones to the 53 man roster, the Lions probably put DT Levi Onwuzurike on Short Term IR (most likely outcome) or released DT Isaiah Biggs. The other possibility that comes to mind is the Lions put Ifeatu Melifonwu on Short Term IR.
