I'm definitely surprised Jermar Jefferson survived the Lions cutdown to 53 and both Justin Jackson AND Godwin Igwebuike didn't. The Lions brass probably sees more upside from Jefferson than I thought would be the case. The other two RBs would likely help the Lions more this season.
Justin Jackson is a vested veteran. He easily could get an opportunity on another 53 man roster as early as this week. It's possible Jackson could be re-signed to the Lions 53 man roster as early as tomorrow. If he doesn't get any other NFL 53 man roster opportunities, the Lions would likely make him a Practice Squad priority.
Godwin Igwebuike will probably clear waivers. If Igwebulke does, the most likely outcome is he's signed to the Lions P.S.. sometime this week.
I thought Logan Stenberg would fall a little short of making the Lions initial 53 man roster. Except for the last two plays of the pre-season finale, in which Stenberg gave up a pass pressure and a sack on consecutive plays, he performed at a high level over the final two pre-season games. Apparently, the Lions didn't get a trade offer for Stenberg that was good enough. If Matt Nelson ends up on Short Term IR, it's realistically possible Stenberg will take over the extra O-Line blocker role while Nelson is out.
The Lions DT situation will probably get more clarity tomorrow. Demetrius Taylor will almost certainly be on the Lions opening day 53 man roster. Levi Onwuzurike will likely be placed on Short Term IR tomorrow.
The Lions going with 4 TEs and these specific 4 TEs, was the most likely outcome. Derrick Deese Jr. has the best chance of the Lions TEs released to get a Practice Squad offer from the Lions.
The Waived Injured designation is surprising for Trinity Benson and Jashon Cornell, as I didn't see or hear anything that indicated either had an injury. Cornell will more likely than not be on IR all season, as the Lions would be able to retain him in 2023 without competition. Benson is set to be an UFA in 2023. The same with C.J. Moore. Both could get injury settlements, as that would then benefit the Lions and the players.
I do believe the Lions will add a QB who was released by another team. Unless a QB jumps out in the Waiver Claim process or as a Vested Veteran, the Lions will probably sign a QB released by another team to the Practice Squad.
I'm surprised JuJu Hughes survived the cutdown to 53, even with the Lions injury situation with Backup Safeties. I think it's likely Hughes would have cleared waivers. Clearly, the Lions brass didn't want to chance it. Ifeatu Melifonwu will likely be placed on Short Term IR tomorrow. A few accomplished vested Veteran Safeties were released by other teams. It's realistic possible one of them will interest the Lions. The Lions might wait until after the opener vs. the Eagles to sign one of them. This way, their entire 2022 base salary isn't fully guaranteed.
