NFL Network mock draft has Lions passing on Devin White for Jonah Williams
………….. I hope the Lions pass on Jonah Williams or any other Offensive Lineman with pick # 8. Even in a trade down, I prefer the Lions going in another direction. Using a 2nd or 3rd Round pick on an Interior Offensive Lineman seems like a more effective way for the Lions to maximize 2019 draft resources.

NFL mock draft 2019: Lions take a tight end in the top 10 again
8. Detroit Lions -- T.J. Hockenson, TE, Iowa The Lions want a trade down here, and if Oliver is still available, it's possible a team like the Falcons ponies up to make it happen. I believe they have four players they would love to draft in the first round, which I'll touch on later. But short of a deal, their favorite one could be Hockenson. He can bring a mix of run blocking and receiving, certainly more of the latter but with the potential and desire to add to the former. The Lions love high-floor players from major conferences filling positions of need in the first round. Although Brian Burns also fits that and provides better value in my estimate, they will use the signings of Trey Flowers and Romeo Okwara as well as last year's nightmare run of tight ends to justify taking the safest road yet again in the first round.
………………………………………..
If Devin White is gone ( close call ) and as expected Nick Bosa, Josh Allen, and Quinnen Williams are off the board, I'm hoping a good trade down opportunity occurs for the Lions. If not, I hope the Lions brass objectively believes that Montez Sweat checks all of the boxes favorably.

Armed with a rare top-10 pick, Bob Quinn has a choice he knows he can’t afford to miss on ……………………………………..... . Frank Ragnow started games at Center and RG with Arkansas. He ended up starting all 16 games for the Lions at LG in his rookie season. Hence, he did have a position adjustment to some extent in the NFL.
Bob Quinn might have major interest in a player with pick # 8, who is considered small and /or short in one or more ways. It's also a very realistic possibility that with his comments that Quinn is trying to create more demand for pick # 8.

Here are 5 trade-down possibilities for the Lions in the 2019 NFL Draft
…………………………………………… .
I can't recall the Lions making a trade with the Giants last year. The Lions made two trades during the 2018 Draft itself. Both were with the Patriots.
I remain skeptical the Lions will end up drafting a WR in Round 1.
If the Lions do trade down, pick # 11 is my preference for the Lions to acquire. A good outcome from my point of view is the Lions draft Brian Burns with pick # 11, with the Lions ending up with the Bengals 3rd Round Pick for no higher than the Lions 5th Round pick ( in addition to pick # 8 ).

Detroit Lions will pick one of these 5 players if they stay at No. 8
……………….
If given the choice between the 2 players, I would prefer Christian Wilkins over Ed Oliver. Yet, with pick # 8, I'm not confident that Wilkins will provide enough value for the Lions in the Lions Defensive Scheme. Wilkins probably is a better fit for Defensive schemes that attack upfield much more often than not, like the 3 previous systems the Lions used ( from 2006 to 2017 ). Not to mention, the Lions are currently in very good shape regarding the interior Defensive Line situation. Wilkins has average at best sized arms 32 1/ 2 ) for an interior Defensive Lineman. He doesn't have the mass that Damon Harrison and A'Shawn Robinson have.

NFL draft 2019: Why I chose Iowa TE T.J. Hockenson for Detroit in my final mock
8. Detroit Lions -- T.J. Hockenson, TE, Iowa Do you take Montez Sweat, a 6-foot-6 defensive end who just ran the 40 faster than Odell Beckham? Or T.J. Hockenson, a tight end that reminds some analysts of Rob Gronkowski? What about Rashan Gary, a defensive lineman so physically gifted that he was once the No. 1 recruit in the country and can slide up and down anywhere on the line? Or any offensive lineman you please? The Lions have so many ways they could go. So I went back to the Bob Quinn tape, and when you do that, his priorities in the first round become clear. He's used those picks on talented players at positions of need, yes, but also low-risk prospects who have high floors. It's almost like he's more concerned by not whiffing than he is squeezing every ounce of potential possible out of the pick. Put it all together, and to me, Hockenson makes the most sense. He fills a position of need. He instantly adds a sure-handedness to the passing game, and anyone watching Lions football down the stretch last season knows how badly they need that. But he's also a tremendous blocker -- the best in this class -- and would add muscle to that ground game Detroit wants so badly to lean on under Darrell Bevell. And he comes with the Kirk Ferentz stamp of approval.
There's a reason Hockenson has become one of the trendiest picks for Detroit. Believe me, I'd like very much to make a more creative pick. But I can't, because no matter how many laps my brain takes, it always comes up Hockenson.
For a more in-depth explanation of the pick, click here.
………………………………
I'm projecting T.J. Hockenson to be drafted in the pick # 7 to pick # 12 range.

Eight prospect possibilities for Lions at No. 8 in the NFL Draft
………………………………..
The best 2 realistic options for the Lions with pick # 8 are Devin White and Trading Down. If both aren't viable options when the Lions are on the clock at pick # 8, Montez Sweat would be my preference if the Lions brass is satisfied with him medically and from a character standpoint. T.J. Hockenson ( though I prefer the Lions don't take a TE in this spot ) probably would be the next best option, with Brian Burns pretty close.

PFT’s 2019 mock draft
8. Lions: T.J. Hockenson, TE, Iowa. Gronk is gone; long live Gronk. Hockenson could become sort-of the guy in Detroit that Rob Gronkowski was in New England — a year after the Lions tried to trade for Gronkowski.
……………..
If the first 5 in this Mock Draft becomes a reality and the Giants draft a QB with pick # 6, Josh Allen easily could be available at # 8 barring the Jaguars trading down from the # 7 spot.
If the Seahawks are fortunate to get Montez Sweat at # 21, their trade sending Frank Clark to the Chiefs will even look better than it already is for them.
I would be shocked if Devin Bush lasts to the Chargers ( pick # 28 ).

NFL mock draft 4.0: Detroit Lions get the trade down they desire
8. Cincinnati Bengals QB Dwayne Haskins, Ohio State – TRADE – Quinn gets his wish as the Bengals go up to get new coach Zac Taylor a quarterback. Cincinnati has 11 picks in the draft, and while five of those come in the sixth round, the price to move up three spots is not prohibitive. It likely would cost the Bengals a third-round pick, and they’d get the Lions’ fourth-rounder back in return.
11. Detroit Lions OL Jonah Williams, Alabama – TRADE – The Lions miss out on Oliver, Hockenson and White, but Williams is arguably the best offensive linemen in the draft. He would start Day 1 at right guard and could eventually move to right tackle when the Lions are done with Rick Wagner. Bob Quinn loves offensive linemen, and SEC players, and Williams checks both boxes.
………………………………....
If this trade and the top 10 picks happen this way, I prefer the Lions to draft Brian Burns at #11 . With Devin Bush my 2nd preference choice.

Dave Birkett's NFL mock draft 5.0: Detroit Lions pick a familiar face
8. Detroit Lions TE T.J. Hockenson, Iowa – The Lions are desperate to move out of this pick, and I do think Washington, the Bengals or Falcons could move up — the Falcons were rumored to be interested Tuesday. But I’m not projecting trades in this mock, and I continue to believe Hockenson is the type of player the Lions will gladly take on their roster. In this scenario, I gave him to the Lions over Devin Bush and Brian Burns.
…………………………..
This scenario reflects my comments from earlier in the week:
The best 2 realistic options for the Lions with pick # 8 are Devin White and Trading Down. If both aren't viable options when the Lions are on the clock at pick # 8, Montez Sweat would be my preference if the Lions brass is satisfied with him medically and from a character standpoint. T.J. Hockenson ( though I prefer the Lions don't take a TE in this spot ) probably would be the next best option, with Brian Burns pretty close.
