Detroit Lions training camp observations: Dan Campbell’s optimism starts with his staff
.......
Mark Gilbert was a highly productive player with Duke before injuries became the dominant theme of the remainder of his time on the collegiate level. If Gilbert can remain relatively healthy and has regained most of his pre-injury skills, he could emerge as one of the best Lions stories of the 2022 season.
Jeff Okudah's recovery from a Torn Achilles is already becoming one of the best Lions stories in a long time. I'm surprised and concerned that Okudah is getting reps on Punt Coverage. That much more with Okudah coming off a career threatening injury.
Julian Okwara has major upside potential as a pass rusher.
Regarding the Safeties, DeShon Elliott (not DeShon Hamilton), is the player Dave Birkett identified.

Lions training camp notebook: Day 2 top observations
.........
Greg Bell could be headed to Waivers, with an Injury Designation, if the Hamstring Injury would keep him out for more than a few days. Especially, if the Lions need the roster spot for practice purposes.
David Blough has worked with Tom Kennedy for a number of years. Blough needs to much better than he was on that very high throw to Kennedy.
Nolan Givan isn't going to be around long with the Lions if he doesn't substantially improve with pass catching.
James Houston certainly helped his cause with the Lions with the Screen Play read.

Lions training camp notebook: Day 3 notes and observations
...........
Rookie Defensive Players James Houston and Demetrius Harris continue to make their presence felt. How they perform in the padded practices next week could go along way in their quest to be on the Lions Opening Day 53 man roster.
Shane Zylstra's performance in the Red Zone drills could open the door for him to get more opportunities against projected starters.

Lions training camp notebook: Day 4
...........
If Aidan Hutchinson performs as well in pads as he has up until this point, he could emerge as the Lions best Defensive Player by sometime in his rookie season.
Unless Jermar Jefferson significantly narrows the gap as a RB with Craig Reynolds, I think he's probably not going to make the Lions opening day 53 man roster. If Jefferson is only the Lions 4th best RB option, Godwin Igwebuike has a good chance of winning the # 4 RB spot. Igwebuike is one of the Lions best Special Teams players. As long as Igwebuike avoids fumbles, it would make more sense for him to be the Lions # 4 RB. In that role, Special Teams is much more important, unless multiple injuries occur on the higher part of the RB Depth Chart.

Observations: Lions WR Quintez Cephus leaves practice with another injury

Observations: Lions WR Quintez Cephus leaves practice with another injury

Great job by Aidan Hutchinson rebounding from Monday's practice and his work after practice!
Austin Bryant made his presence felt in both of the Lions padded practices. Because Romeo Okwara's status for the beginning of the regular season is uncertain, at least publicly, and Josh Paschal will very likely begin the regular season on the Regular Season PUP List, I think Bryant has a pretty good chance to be on the Lions opening day 53 man roster.
The 45 yard TD run by Jermar Jefferson was much needed by him, in his quest to be on the Lions opening day 53 man roster. The major question marks with Jefferson are not as a rusher. His receiving, blitz protection, and Special Teams play all need to improve significantly from last season.
I think Justin Jackson has a noticeably better chance to be on the Lions opening day 53 man roster than Kyle Meincke believes is the case.

Lions stock report after the 1st week of training camp
Derrick Barnes, Jermar Jefferson have made ‘some of the biggest progress’
......
As you can see, opinions of Jermar Jefferson's progress in training camp are mixed. With Justin Jackson now in the Lions RB mix, the path to a roster spot for Jermar Jefferson is clearly more difficult. Far from impossible though, especially if he continues to improve on Special Teams and makes significant strides as a receiver in the next 3 weeks.
The health of Quintez Cephus and the progress level of Trinity Benson are major factors in whether Kalil Pimpleton can beat the odds to be on the Lions opening day 53 man roster.
Jarrad Davis performed very well on Special Teams with the Lions two seasons ago, after his playing time as a LB diminished. Davis wasn't used much on Special Teams his 2nd and 3rd seasons with the Lions. He's probably going to have to be amongst the best Lions Special Teams players this summer to have a realistic chance at even surviving the cutdown to 53, unless he his play as an off the ball LB improves noticeably the next 3 weeks.

Observations: Lions’ Austin Bryant throws punch, sacks QB in yet another impressive practice
.........
When combining the all out effort that Austin Bryant displayed last season and his improvements from the off-season that have contributed to him being off to a great start in training camp, Bryant is on a path to earn plenty of Defensive snaps on Defense this season. The Lions DE situation has noticeably improved, even with Romeo Okwara on the PUP List. The Lions DT situation is what I'm currently concerned about.
D.J. Chark is a legit # 1 WR when relatively healthy. He's displaying that early in training camp.
Kalif Raymond's versatility and dependability certainly add to his value for the Lions.
The Lions desperately need Jared Goff to stay relatively healthy.

Observations: DJ Chark heating up in Detroit Lions training camp
..........
While a relatively healthy Jamison Williams has the potential to become a game changing high caliber # 1 WR, while Williams continues to recover from a Torn ACL, the Lions are in good shape at WR with D.J. Chark, Amon-Ra St. Brown and Josh Reynolds as the team's available top 3 WRs. With D'Andre Swift and T.J. Hockenson on the field with these 3 WRs, and the Lions having the team's preferred starting Offensive Line on the field, Jared Goff will be surrounded by a winning caliber unit.

Observations: DJ Chark catches 2 TDs, Jared Goff throws 4 in big day at Lions intrasquad scrimmage
.........
The addition of D.J. Chark is having a major positive effect on the Lions deep passing game. The confidence that Jared Goff is showing in Chark should lead much more deep ball throws by Goff, especially compared to the first half of the 2021 season.
David Blough seems to be regressing. It would make sense for the Lions to bring in another QB, in order for him to gain familiarity with the Lions Offense. This probably would give the Lions more roster flexibility during the regular season.
Malcolm Rodriguez is on a path to getting plenty of Defensive snaps in the regular season.
Austin Bryant is on the verge of securing a roster spot, regardless of the status of Romeo Okwara and Josh Paschal.
Tom Kennedy has a shot at making the Lions opening day roster. Especially, because of his versatility.
If Austin Seibert displays consistency in making shorter FGs and PATs, he very likely will be the Lions opening day Kicker.

10 takeaways from the first 10 days of Lions training camp
.........
The Lions backup Offensive Tackle situation has been one of my Lions concerns in the off-season and in training camp. Brad Holmes and co. need to bring in a legit candidate to be the Lions primary backup Tackle at both Tackle positions.
Much like with C.J. Moore, Special Teams could be the difference in Bobby Price surviving the cutdown to 53 and being on the Lions opening day 53 man roster. Special Teams keeps Anthony Pittman in the mix as well.
While Alim McNeill is looking like he will build on his rookie season, especially with the Lions more aggressive Defensive scheme this season, the Lions overall DT situation is concerning.
