Tremendous job by Brad Holmes with the trade up deal with the Vikings, in order to land WR Jameson Williams. Much more often than not, I prefer the Lions not trading up. That much more with the Vikings, Packers, or Bears. The trade Holmes made with the Vikings that enabled the Lions to draft Williams, is an exception, not the norm.
When I first saw that the Lions traded up with the Vikings to Pick # 12, I thought that the LA Rams 1st Round Pick in 2023 was likely going to be in the trade. When I saw the Lions traded up for Williams, not a QB or another player that I would have been against the Lions trading so far up for, it was a relief. Then when I saw that the Lions only had to give up in addition to pick # 32, pick # 34 and pick # 66, with the Lions getting back pick # 46 in the trade, I was elated!
While concern is understandable with Jameson Williams coming off a Torn ACL, the advances in surgery and recovery from a Torn ACL, have been extraordinary. It's very likely that Williams will regain at least the vast majority of his pre-injury on the field abilities. If Williams didn't suffer a major knee injury back in January. I believe he would have been the first WR selected in this draft.
Jameson Williams was an elite vertical WR, with excellent ball tracking skills, before the torn ACL. Williams also did a very good job of getting horizonal separation and going from 0 t0 60 quickly, when he effectively escaped press coverage. Granted, Williams needs to gain some additional bulk strength to help escape press coverage more consistently and handle traffic better with the ball coming his direction. However, Williams has good after the catch skills. He also needs to improve his technique at times when attempting to catch the ball. But all of his shortcomings are correctable. By the 2023 season, Williams should have regained the vast majority of his pre-injury abilities, barring something unexpected. Great long term addition by the Lions.
