Lions training camp position preview: Quarterback
.........
Unless David Blough can provide legit competition for Tim Boyle from the Lions coaches standpoint, the # 2 QB will likely be amongst the team's most pronounced weaknesses in the 2022 season.
It remains to be seen if the Lions will even keep a # 3 QB on the 53-man roster for much of or all of the 2022 season.

Dan Campbell opens the door for the Lions to keep just 2 QBs
.........
The Lions should bring in a QB who would be a viable Practice Squad option. This way, if the Lions release either Tim Boyle or David Blough (the more likely cut) and that player ends up with another team, the Lions will have a 3rd throwing arm for practice. Someone, who could eventually play in a game, if necessary.
A.J. McCarron is on the open market. I don't think there would be a significant drop-off with McCarron, compared to Boyle and Blough, especially if McCarron has several weeks to learn the Lions Offensive System.
Also, there will be QBs released by other teams. Unless both Boyle and Blough step up noticeably in the pre-season, barring the injury factor, the best way to proceed is only go with 2 QBs on the 53 man roster at the start of the regular season.

Lions’ Campbell: Preseason finale provided ‘a lot of clarity’ on backup QB situation
......
This thread relates to the following thread:
Steelers 19, Lions 9 : Pre-Season Game # 3 ( 2022 )
detroit-lions-forum.proboards.com/thread/1507/steelers-lions-season-game-2022
Tim Boyle had a subpar performance in Pittsburgh. In addition to the interception, 4 of his passes were defected at or near the line of scrimmage. Granted, Boyle didn't get the help from his supporting cast that would have helped him significantly or even more. A huge problem with Boyle is when his supporting cast on Offense is below average or even worse, Boyle hasn't been able to make plays much more often than not. He rarely is able to improvise.
Because of what occurred in this game, on top of the overall body of work of Tim Boyle and David Blough, I now believe that Blough will survive the cutdown to 53 and Boyle won't. It's far from a certainty, being that Blough didn't have a winning caliber performance in Pittsburgh.
I don't expect the Lions to trade for a backup QB, unless the cost no more than the equivalent of a 6th Round pick in 2023.
A QB waiver claim is realistically possible. Especially, since the Lions will have more roster flexibility after the cutdown to 53.

The Lions should cut both David Blough and Tim Boyle .........
While the idea of cutting both Tim Boyle and David Blough sounds good from a theoretical standpoint, it seems impractical. If by chance both QBs get claimed by another, both elect to sign Practice Squad contracts with other teams, or a combination of both, the Lions won't have a 2nd QB who can even run practice in the coming days.
Eventually, this season, the Lions can move on from both QBs, once the Lions have a # 2 QB familiar enough with the Offensive System to give the Lions a realistic chance at winning some games. That time is probably a few weeks away.
