NFL free agency: Detroit Lions in market for Matthew Stafford's backup
…...……......……...…
Nick Foles will very likely get a starting opportunity, with Jacksonville the clear favorite to land his services. Hence, I'm going to take Foles out of the equation at least for a few days.
Of the other QBs listed in the article that are expected to hit the open market, Teddy Bridgewater is the one I prefer if the contract terms make sense for the Lions.
Tyler Taylor would be my top choice as a change of pace type of QB.
It's realistically possible the Lions won't sign a veteran QB until at least seeing what transpires in the draft. Which is fine on this end.

The Jaguars release Blake Bortles
…………………
Because of the $ 6.5 million Blake Bortles has guaranteed for 2019, working out a contract with him for a much lower salary seems like a realistic possibility. With the Kyle O'Brien-Jacksonville connection, I think the Lions will have at least some interest in Bortles.

Dolphins sign Ryan Fitzpatrick
………………
Ryan Fitzpatrick is like a roller coaster. His inconsistency is what's consistent. I'm glad the Lions didn't sign him.

Titans release Blaine Gabbert
…………………
Under no circumstance should the Lions sign Blaine Gabbert. The Titans regular season finale loss at home to the Colts, with a Wildcard playoff spot at stake for both teams, by itself is enough of a reason not to consider Gabbert as an option to sign.

I agree. I’m very curious to see who ends up being the #2 QB option this season. I haven’t seen/heard/read much, if anything, in regard the important position.

Joe, based on what we both mentioned, I think there's a good chance the Lions will draft a QB by the end of the 4th Round of next month's draft.

David - I think they’ll draft one too, maybe by the fourth round as you suggested. However, I don’t know if I want a mid to late round draft choice entering the season as the Lions #2 QB.

Joe, this is a major reason why it wouldn't be surprising to me if the Lions draft a QB in Round 2 or Round 3.

It would surprise, but not shock, me if the Lions drafted a quarterback THAT early. There are more pressing needs elsewhere; but Bob Quinn has made a “surprise” pick, or two, in all of his drafts. IF the value is there; I'm not opposed to it.

Joe, one possibility that comes to mind is a QB the Lions draft is used on some packages/ plays that fit a more athletic skill set. Much like the Saints do with QB Taysom Hill. Especially, now that Darrell Bevell is the Lions Offensive Coordinator.

It IS a possibility; but I hope not. I’m not a fan of that tactic/strategy.

Joe, at the very least I hope this type of strategy isn't something the Lions use multiple times in a given game. I definitely don't want the Lions to use a draft pick on a QB in the top 3 Rounds largely to use him in packages multiple plays per game. Yet, with no indication of the Lions having interest in signing a vested veteran FA QB, it wouldn't surprise me if the Lions have a specific type of skill set that the team will look for in the draft.
