While I'm surprised that the Lions chose DT Alim McNeill with pick # 72, in the early part of Round 3, after taking DT Levi Onwuzurike with pick # 41, in Round 2, I believe McNeill is a good value selection by the Lions. I projected McNeill going to Cleveland, with pick # 59, in Round 2 of my Mock Draft.
My preference with pick # 72, based on what transpired with the first 71 selections, was for the Lions to draft North Carolina WR Dyami Brown. I didn't expect Brown to be available with pick # 72. It was surprising on this end that Brown lasted to pick # 82. WFT selected Brown in that spot. Having said this, I'm more than comfortable that McNeill was the selection.
What pleases me most is Brad Holmes clearly went with value from his perspective, instead of addressing a greater need. Not many GMs or NFL Draft decision makers in general would have had the discipline Holmes displayed when drafting McNeill.
Alim McNeill is actually 6'2" or very slightly under. He's certainly taller than 6'0". His overall length is probably his greatest drawback as an NFL Draft prospect. But it's not a major liability, as McNeill has 32 5/ 8" arm length.
When combining the upfield quickness that McNeill has with his upper and lower body strength, and that he usually plays low, he has a great amount of talent. His overall athleticism is a major plus. McNeill needs to improve with blocker awareness, pass rush techniques / moves, and be more consistent overall with his hands. But he has plenty to work with, has good football character, and has been relatively durable.
